Taggart and his men prepare to transport both Jake and petulant young drunkard Percy Dolarhyde ( Paul Dano) to Santa Fe for trial. Jake nearly escapes, but a woman named Ella Swenson ( Olivia Wilde) interferes. Sheriff John Taggart ( Keith Carradine) recognizes the stranger as wanted outlaw Jake Lonergan and attempts to arrest him. He wanders into the town of Absolution, where preacher Meacham ( Clancy Brown) treats his wound.

Cowboys & Aliens received mixed reviews, with critics generally praising its acting while criticizing other aspects. Despite studio pressure to release the film in 3-D, Favreau chose to film traditionally and in anamorphic format ( widescreen picture on standard 35 mm film) to further a "classic movie feel". On a budget of $163 million, filming for Cowboys & Aliens began in June 2010, in New Mexico and California. After the graphic novel was published in 2006, development on the film was begun again, and Favreau signed on as director in September 2009. The project began development in April 1997, when Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures bought film rights to a concept pitched by Rosenberg, former president at Malibu Comics, which he described as a graphic novel in development. The film was produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Kurtzman, Orci, and Rosenberg, with Steven Spielberg and Favreau serving as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby, based on a screen story by the latter two along with Steve Oedekerk.
The plot revolves around an amnesiac outlaw (Craig), a wealthy cattleman (Ford), and a mysterious traveler (Wilde) who must ally to save a group of townspeople abducted by aliens. The film is based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Exhibit A is "Cowboys & Aliens" which is a B movie idea if there ever was one, made with a blockbuster mentality that does not get either genre right.(By contrast, the Doctor Who episode "A Town Called Mercy," a jelly baby western, nails it, along with pointed insights into the possibility of redemption.) It does not help the banal story and slack pacing that Daniel Craig is miscast, his brooding intensity doing little for a movie so desperately in need of a sense of humor. And just as Percy's father(Harrison Ford) shows up for a quiet conference, the light show starts. Not only does Sheriff Taggart(Keith Carradine) take Percy into custody but also Jake who it turns out is wanted for everything shy of cow tipping. Things do not improve once he gets back to town as Percy Dolarhyde(Paul Dano) shoots up the place, accidentally hitting a deputy. "Cowboys & Aliens" starts with Jake Lonergan(Daniel Craig) waking with the grandmother of all hangovers in the middle of nowhere with no memory of who he is but with a weird metal bracelet that he cannot remove from his arm.
